1. Discover The Temples of Angkor

Picture
The Angkor experience is at the top of every travellers list. The sunrise at Angkor Wat is breathe taking and the temples captured by the forest are amazing.

Angkor Archeological Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was once home to an entire civilization between 800 and 1500AD. At the height of the Khmer Empire, Angkor was the largest city in the world. There are over 1000 temples to explore and more then 1000 years worth of history, myth, legend, religion and culture immured in their stone walls.

The temples of Angkor are all unique and each one of them is exciting to visit. Your Lotus Guide, Sreang Teng will explain nuances of art and architecture, and tell you in-depth stories of emperors, gods, battles, and ritual. Lotus Guides itineraries are designed to avoid the large crowds and they present opportunities for you to experience Angkor one-on-one. Contact Sreang Teng today and book your journey into the heart of Angkor.

Temple passes are sold in one, three or seven day admissions. Good foot wear is recommended. Bottled water is provided with the rental of air-conditioned vehicles.

2. Connect With Recent History

Picture
Cambodia has experienced a destructive and volitile recent history. The Khmer Rouge took political power in 1975 and in that time caused the deaths, directly and indirectly, of 1.5 million people in Cambodia. Money, religion and history were abolished from the nation. Academics, spiritual people, and community leaders were methodically executed with crude methods. The people who survived were forced to labour for 16 hours a day, and only recieved small amounts of food for their effort.

In 1979 the Khmer Rouge were forced to flee into the jungles of Southern Cambodia and Thailand by the Vietnamese army. To stop any soldiers from re-entering the country, landmines were used by all sides to create dangerous borders of explosive consequences. The millions of landmines are still being removed today by specialists.

On your Lotus Guide tour, Sreang Teng will introduce you to his personal experiences, the powerfully emotional stories of recent history, and help you develop connections to the challenges of present day Cambodia. This is an experience that you will remember.

3. Be The Difference Tour

Picture
An exciting part of every travelling experience, is meeting the people. At the request of many travellers, Lotus Guides offers humanitarian tours as part of your visit to Angkor and Siem Reap.

There are many challenges in Cambodia and perhaps the most current is the world food shortages. Very recently, the price of rice has been increasing in US10 increments per 50kg bag and putting orphanages, families and even working class individuals in a stressful situation. Development is turning farmland into condos and forests into dusty fields. Property values are rising significantly.

There are countless opportunities to be the difference in peoples lives in this country and not just by donating money. Sreang Teng can assist you in finding the right opportunity. He can negotiate prices for school supplies, food and clothing and no matter how you decide to give, he will find a family or orphanage that will greatly appreciate your generosity.

7. A Day In The Life Tour

Picture
Have you ever wanted to live a day in the life of a local villager. There are some challenging and rewarding skills to learn. Join a family as they go about there day planting rice, harvesting bananas, weaving and thatching roofs. This sustainable tourism is not only a creative way to experience Cambodia but a great way to learn about the Khmer culture. This adventure begins first thing in the morning and will vary in price depending on the experience.

Teaching tourists is a wonderful way to provide extra income to poor working families. However, it is important to maintain a certain amount of seperation. It is not the intention of this program to create a culture of begging so giving money directly to the families is discouraged. Your guide will make a donation for you from the price of your tour. This money will benefit the entire village and allow it to grow together without relying on handouts.

On the Lotus Guides Outside adventure there are also fantastic opportunities to visit the River of 1000 Lingas at Kbal Spean. You can also discover the first large scale construction of a temple by a Khmer King, Lolei.
